Moreton Island in a Day
Brisbane is an city of secret adventures tucked around every corner. Do you know where you can see sand dunes as high as the Sahara, streams of pure water, and miles of white beaches? Well, it's just an hour or so away from the heart of Brisbane and you can get there nearly everyday for a day trip that includes a sea journey, driving over sandy tracks in a 4WD, exploring stranded shop wrecks and swimming in Honeymoon Bay.
It's called Moreton Island, and just because it seems far away, lots of people don't know about an
island adventure
so close to a major . No, you don't need your own boat, your own 4WD or even your own sandboard, you can get it all one of many cruises that operate out of Brisbane.
Embarking on Moreton, climb to the tops of tall sand dunes and fly down them on sand boards - but then you have to walk back up, drive up through the island to the see the Lighthouse, or what I liked best, drive on the hard sand of the eastern beach with nothing between you and the sea. You can also walk around Honeymoon Bay, swim at the Blue Lagoon and a enjoy a picnic lunch at the Champagne Rock Pools. And if you're tempted to come back for longer,
camping may be the answer for you.
At the end of the day, you get driven back to the catamaran, but get ready to jump out and dig if the wheels get stuck in the sand! It's all part of the adventure!
